CardioVision Testing

Northwest WellnessFor hardening of the arteries.

This is an FDA approved screening tool for arterial stiffness or hardening of the arteries. In addition to blood pressure and pulse information, the CardioVision Test generates information on the stiffness of the brachial artery that runs down the arm. An automatic pressure cuff is attached to a pressure transducer and a computer. During depressurization, the arteries go through 5 – 15 seconds of fluttering, where the arteries will open and close at each heartbeat. A healthy artery will have lots of movement during this fluttering. An artery that’s stiff and full of plaque will have diminished movement. The computer analyzes the movement and the computer determines what is called the Arterial Stiffness Index (ASI). The ASI is a number that reports the flexibility of the artery. Because arteriosclerosis reduces flexibility in arteries, the higher the ASI, the more likely someone is at risk for heart attack, stroke, and other circulatory diseases, including congestive heart failure.

No, it is not necessary to fast before taking this test.
Note: If you are having other tests performed, please see their respective test descriptions.

What test result values are desirable?
ASI readings of less than 80 are normal. Readings between 81 and 209 means increased artery stiffness. Readings greater than 209 indicates arterial sclerosis and indicates that further medical testing may be recommend.

How are the test results presented?
The results are presented in a form that the computer prints out. A sample form is shown below. Please click on the image to enlarge.
